UAE VAT calculator: add or remove 5% VAT

UAE VAT is 5%. To add VAT, multiply the net amount by 1.05 (AED 1,000 becomes AED 1,050). To remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price, divide it by 1.05 (AED 1,050 becomes AED 1,000, of which AED 50 is VAT).

How the UAE VAT calculation works

The standard VAT rate in the UAE is 5%, set by Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, and it applies to most goods and services. Some supplies are zero-rated (0%), such as exports, international transport and certain education and healthcare. Others are exempt, such as most residential rent and local passenger transport.

  • Add VAT: VAT = net amount × 0.05; total = net amount × 1.05.
  • Remove VAT: net amount = total ÷ 1.05; VAT = total − net amount.

When you must register for VAT

VAT registration is mandatory once your taxable supplies and imports pass AED 375,000 in the last 12 months, or are expected to in the next 30 days. You can register voluntarily from AED 187,500. Our VAT registration guide explains the steps on EmaraTax.

Charging VAT on your invoices

A VAT-registered business must show its TRN, the VAT rate and the VAT amount in AED on every tax invoice, and file a VAT return within 28 days of the end of each tax period.

Frequently asked questions

What is the VAT rate in the UAE?

The standard rate is 5% on most goods and services, in force since 1 January 2018. Some supplies are zero-rated (0%) and some are exempt.

How do I calculate 5% VAT on an amount?

Multiply the amount by 0.05. For example, 5% VAT on AED 2,000 is AED 100, so the total including VAT is AED 2,100.

How do I remove VAT from a total?

Divide the VAT-inclusive total by 1.05 to get the amount before VAT; the difference is the VAT. For AED 2,100, the net amount is AED 2,000 and the VAT is AED 100.

What is the difference between zero-rated and exempt?

Neither carries VAT on the sale, but a business making zero-rated supplies can recover the VAT it pays on its costs, while a business making exempt supplies generally cannot.

Can I charge VAT if I am not VAT registered?

No. Only VAT-registered businesses with a valid TRN can charge VAT. Customers can check a TRN on the FTA website.
